Howard Sands, PhD, a longtime member of the AACR, died March 18, 2021 at the age of 78.
Sands was born on August 20, 1942, in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in 1964 and a PhD in pharmacology from Case Western Reserve University in 1969.
Sands conducted postdoctoral research at Northwestern University, then built a long career that spanned academia and industry. He was a pharmacologist at the National Jewish Hospital & Research Center from 1971 to 1981; group leader in pharmacology and toxicology at New England Nuclear from 1981 to 1989; principal in research science at DuPont-Merck Pharmaceutical Co. from 1989 to 1994; and principal investigator at Lexin Pharmaceutical Co. from 1994 to 1996.
Sands joined the AACR as an Active member in 1990 and transferred to Emeritus membership in 2006.
