Elizabeth K. Weisburger, PhD, a chemical toxicologist and a longtime member of the AACR, died February 12, 2019, at the age of 94.
Weisburger was born April 9, 1924, in Finland, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Lebanon Valley College and earned her PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 1947.
Weisburger became an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1951. She later joined a biochemistry lab at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where she would spend much of her career. In 1961, Weisburger and her husband, John Weisburger, started the Carcinogen Screening Section of the Experimental Pathology Branch at the NCI. In 1974, she became chief of the Laboratory of Carcinogen Metabolism. She later moved to the Division of Cancer Etiology and became the assistant director for chemical carcinogenesis in 1981.
After retiring from the NCI in 1988, Weisburger began consulting in toxicology and chemical carcinogenesis. Among numerous career awards, she received the Hildebrand Prize from the Chemical Society of Washington, the Garvan Medal from the American Chemical Society, and the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service.
Weisburger joined the AACR in 1967, and was a member of the Women in Cancer Research membership group and the Chemistry in Cancer Research working group.
