AACR Recognizes World Cancer Day 2019 On February 4

PHILADELPHIA – On February 4, 2019, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will recognize World Cancer Day, bringing awareness to the global impact of cancer by showing support to all those affected by cancer both in the United States and internationally. 

The AACR is offering a number of resources to media interested in covering World Cancer Day:  

  • Two world-renowned cancer experts are available to share their perspectives on the global impact of cancer: 

Elaine R. Mardis, PhD – Dr. Mardis is President-Elect of the AACR and a world-renowned researcher whose work centers on the genomic characterization of cancer and its implications for cancer medicine. She is co-executive director, The Institute for Genomic Medicine and Nationwide Foundation Endowed Chair in Genomic Medicine, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio; and professor of pediatrics and member, Solid Tumor Therapeutics Program, OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, Ohio. 

Adriana Albini, PhD – A member of the AACR Board of Directors, Dr. Albini is among the most cited Italian female scientists. Her research focuses on the tumor microenvironment. She is a professor of pathology in the Medicine and Surgery department, University of Milan-Bicocca; head of Vascular Biology and Angiogenesis Laboratory, IRCCS MultiMedica; and scientific director, Fondazione MultiMedica Onlus, Milan, Italy.

  • Cancer Research Catalyst, the official blog of the AACR, published a post compiling the most common cancer questions from the public, gathered during a recent television broadcast that brought together some of the greatest minds in cancer research to field over 1,000 questions about cancer. Topics ranged from cancer immunotherapy and other treatments to prevention and detection. Media are welcome to use excerpts from the post.
