AACR Names Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Molecular Cancer Research
PHILADELPHIA – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) today announced the appointment of Massimo Loda, MD, as the Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cancer Research, one of the nine highly esteemed journals published by the AACR. Loda officially began his term on August 1.
Molecular Cancer Research publishes articles describing novel basic cancer research discoveries of broad interest to the field. The journal prioritizes analyses performed at the molecular and cellular level that reveal novel mechanistic insights into pathways and processes linked to cancer risk, development, and/or progression.
“The AACR is delighted to welcome Dr. Loda as Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cancer Research,” said Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), Chief Executive Officer of the AACR. “Given Dr. Loda’s extensive experience in molecular pathology, coupled with his significant accomplishments in the past as a deputy editor of the journal, he is particularly well suited for this position. Under his extraordinary leadership, Molecular Cancer Research will continue to attract high-quality manuscripts that contribute to our understanding of and progress against cancer.”
Loda is currently the David D. Thompson Professor of Pathology, Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Deputy Director of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine; Pathologist-in-Chief at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center; and Professor of Pathology, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School. Loda’s research efforts have focused on metabolic alterations in prostate tumorigenesis, specifically on lipid metabolism and its regulation. Loda is a highly respected molecular pathologist, having been at the forefront in the invention and application of novel molecular pathology techniques such as ex vivo organotypic cultures and multiparametric imaging or metabolic profiling in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue.
“I am honored to serve as Editor-in-Chief of this prestigious journal,” said Loda. “Molecular Cancer Research occupies a critical space in cancer research literature in exploring novel mechanistic insights and providing a forum for important subspecialty areas. I look forward to working with the editorial team to highlight innovative, impactful basic science that will help move the field forward.”
Loda has been a member of the AACR since 1993, having served as Senior Editor of Clinical Cancer Research and Molecular Cancer Research. In 2020, Loda became Deputy Editor of Molecular Cancer Research. He has also been a member of the editorial advisory board of Cancer Today, the AACR’s magazine for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, since 2015. Loda has been actively involved in other areas of the AACR’s work. He is currently Chair of the AACR Pathology Task Force and a member of the AACR Education and Training Committee. He has also served as Cochair of the Annual Meeting Program and Education Committees, a member of the AACR Special Conferences Committee, and a member of the Pezcoller Foundation-AACR International Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research Committee. Loda was a member of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project team that won the AACR Team Science Award in 2020. From 2012-2016, he was an investigator on the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)-Prostate Cancer Foundation Prostate Cancer Dream Team. The AACR serves as the Scientific Partner of SU2C.
Loda obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his degree in medicine and surgery at the University of Milan in Milan, Italy. After that, Loda completed his residency in anatomic pathology at the Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a fellowship in molecular pathology at New England Medical Center, Tufts University in Boston. In 2015, Loda was elected a member of the Association of American Physicians. He has been lauded with numerous scientific honors and awards, such as the Society for Basic Urologic Research Meritorious Achievement Award, the William O. Russell Lectureship, and the Donald S. Coffey-CaP CURE Physician-Scientist Award, among others. Loda has authored or coauthored more than 400 scientific publications and one book, titled Pathology and Epidemiology of Cancer.
