AACR Featured at the Atlantic’s People v. Cancer

The AACR’s Past President, scientist mentors and survivor advocates served as featured speakers for The Atlantic’s People v. Cancer, an interactive public summit that explored what it means to live with cancer today.

The all-day live event, held on November 12, 2019 in New York City, brought together researchers from top cancer centers, survivors and advocates to discuss the latest advances in research, treatment options just on the horizon, survivorship, and advocacy. Topics such as the scalability of immunotherapy, Medicaid expansion, nutrition’s impact on cancer care and many others were discussed throughout the day.

During the event, AACR Past President Raymond DuBois, MD (right), lead a conversation titled “Driving Progress Against Cancer,” detailing how research is the foundation of the lifesaving clinical advances and public policy initiatives designed to improve the health of the nation. Charles Graeber, author of the critically acclaimed book The Breakthrough, moderated the talk.

In addition, AACR Scientist↔Survivor Program Scientist Mentors Emil Lou, MD, and Brian Rivers, PhD, participated in a panel discussion with Survivor Advocates Aime Franco, PhD, and Col. (Ret) James E. Williams Jr. on the need for scientists and survivors to work together to enhance patient advocacy and patient engagement in cancer research. The panel, titled “Collaborations Against Cancer: Patients Partnering with Scientists,” was moderated by ABC News health and science reporter Erin Schumaker.

In addition to participating in the program, the AACR hosted an exhibit booth to further educate attendees about cancer by offering additional information like the AACR Cancer Progress Report and Cancer Today magazine. The AACR was proud to be an underwriter for the event.
