AACR Statement on President Biden’s New Cancer Moonshot Announcement
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) CEO Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s announcement of a new Cancer Moonshot:
“I am thrilled to join President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Dr. Biden at the White House today for this historic announcement. After the devastating interruptions in cancer research and patient care over the past two years, we must act with urgency to restore the scientific momentum against cancer. The reignited Cancer Moonshot will provide an important framework to help improve cancer prevention strategies, increase cancer screenings and early detection, reduce cancer disparities, and propel new lifesaving cures for patients with cancer.
However, if we are to achieve the goals that the President outlined for us today, it is going to require that the President work with Congress to finalize the fiscal year (FY) 2022 appropriations process with robust funding increases for NIH and NCI, as well as announce significant investments in cancer research as part of his FY2023 budget request.
We applaud the Administration’s commitment and leadership on these issues and look forward to working with AACR members and the entire cancer research community to meet the Moonshot’s goals and ultimately end cancer as we know it today.”
The President, Vice President, and First Lady will announce the new Cancer Moonshot today at 1:30 p.m. EST. View the livestream here.
