Session description
Disparities research requires strategic integration of research disciplines to understand and address the complex factors at play. For example, it is often not enough to consider biology alone without integrating social sciences to better comprehend the effects of systemic racism. Developing these productive research partnerships can be daunting, particularly when investigators are extending outside of their expertise or are from institutions that have barriers in place. Nonetheless, as a creative lens allows us the ability to expand the reach of research, so must we develop creative opportunities to establish new, non-traditional, partnerships. Allyship and leadership are important aspects of any multi-institutional program, but the special needs often found at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) must be met with unique solutions.
In this session we will hear from several thought leaders that have successfully established productive partnerships, many including Minority Serving Institutions, with meaningful results. Among our speakers are leaders in the NCI’s Partnerships to Advance Health Equity (PACHE) program, social scientists, clinicians, and biologists who have gone beyond the walls of their institution and their own expertise to catalyze synergistic research programs.
