Michael R. Speicher, MD, a longtime AACR member who was professor and chairman of the Diagnostic and Research Institute of Human Genetics of the Medical University of Graz in Austria, died September 24, 2023, at the age of 62.
Speicher received his education in computer science at the University of Dortmund in Germany and his degree in medicine at the University of Essen. After postdoctoral work at the University of Heidelberg and at Yale University, he joined the Institute of Anthropology and Human Genetics at the Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich in 1996. He moved to the Technical University of Munich in 2001 and the Medical University of Graz in 2006.
At the Diagnostic and Research Institute of Human Genetics, he focused on chromosomal and genomic alterations and their impact on disease susceptibility. He also served as the deputy head of the Diagnostic and Research Centre for Molecular Biomedicine from 2018 to 2023. Speicher was president of the Austrian Society of Human Genetics from 2012 to 2018 and vice-president until his death. He became an AACR member in 1993.
