Malignant transformations are often associated with autoimmunity induction and the generation of autoantibodies against autoantigens. Patients with both solid and hematological tumors exhibit autoantibody activity in their sera as part of their anti-tumor response. Additionally, cancer treatment modalities such as chemotherapy and radiation are known to elicit interferon production and anti-tumor immunity in response to DNA damage. This AACR Special Conference will focus on the mechanisms responsible for cancer immunity and autoimmunity. Special focus will be placed upon the concepts of “global” immune fitness, the body’s capacity to respond to health challenges by mounting an appropriate immune response, and to DNA-driven interferon production, and radiation-induced anti-tumor immunity in the context of cancer therapy.
