AACR Resources and Experts Available for November Cancer Awareness Months
PHILADELPHIA – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has compiled the following resources to support and facilitate reporting on gastric, lung, and pancreatic cancers. November is the awareness month for each of these cancers.
AACR CANCER PROGRESS REPORTS
The AACR’s recent Cancer Progress Report and Cancer Disparities Progress Report offer numerous resources on gastric, lung, and pancreatic cancer, including:
- Information on gastric, lung, and pancreatic cancer statistics and disparities.
- Compelling stories from gastric, lung, and pancreatic cancer survivors:
- Irasema Partida Chavez was diagnosed with stomach cancer after months of persistent heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and fatigue. After initial treatment and eventually a total gastrectomy, she has no evidence of disease and is now a passionate advocate for patients with stomach cancer. Read her story.
- Dr. Phuong Ho, an emergency room physician, was diagnosed with lung cancer after experiencing a mild cough and tightness in her chest. Phuong underwent surgery to remove the entire upper lobe of her lung and is now living cancer-free. Her experience has led to her advocacy work in health education for minority communities and raising awareness about rising lung cancer cases in non-smoking Asian women. Read her story.
- Daniel West was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer after cardiac testing found two nodules on his lung. He had a lobectomy and went through several rounds of chemotherapy. Today, he has no evidence of active cancer. His journey taught him to be an advocate for his own health care. Read his story.
- Dr. Humberto M. Guiot, an infectious disease physician, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022. Despite chemotherapy and surgery, the cancer progressed to distant organs. A ray of hope emerged after genetic testing revealed Humberto was eligible for a clinical trial for a new molecularly targeted treatment, which has put him in complete remission. Read his story.
