AACR Runners for Research Team Helps Raise More Than $500,000 for Cancer Research During Philadelphia Marathon Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the title sponsor of the AACR Philadelphia Marathon, has raised nearly $500,000 for lifesaving cancer research with help from the AACR Runners for Research team, a diverse group of survivors, advocates, researchers, and those wishing to honor or memorialize a loved one.

AACR spokespeople as well as select team members are available for interviews to discuss their connection to cancer and why they chose to fundraise with the AACR:

Danny Romero

Danny first started running in 2019. After suffering a seizure at a family wedding in 2022, he was diagnosed with glioma, a type of brain cancer. He soon underwent a treatment regimen of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

As he recovered, Danny resolved to get back to running. A year after his diagnosis, he ran his first marathon. Today, Danny has run eight half marathons and two full marathons. He will be running the AACR Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday and is looking forward to the companionship of running with the AACR Runners for Research team. You can read more about Danny on the AACR’s website.

Caitlyn Kunisch

Caitlyn is a New Jersey local studying kinesiology at the University of Virginia. Like many others, she knows all too well what it feels like to have a loved one receive a cancer diagnosis. She has watched both her grandfathers, her grandmother, and her uncle experience and pass away from cancer. Caitlyn realized there was a need to advance research further to better prevent, treat, and ultimately, cure cancer.

With her friends’ encouragement, Caitlyn signed up for the AACR Philadelphia Marathon. As part of the AACR Runners for Research team, she has raised more than $5,000 for cancer research with help from friends, family, and patrons of the Allendale Bar & Grill, the restaurant Caitlyn’s family owns in New Jersey.
