Cancer Patient and Advocate to Speak at Senate Forum on NIH Cuts
WHAT
Today, Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Peter Welch (D-VT) will host a forum titled “Cures in Crisis: What Gutting NIH Research Means for Americans with Cancer, Alzheimer’s, & Other Diseases.” The event will feature researchers, patients, and former National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Monica Bertagnolli, MD, who will highlight the devastating impact of recent disruptions at the NIH on scientific progress and patient care.
Among the esteemed panelists is Larry Saltzman, MD, a leukemia patient, retired physician, and former Executive Research Director at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Saltzman’s story, featured in the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Report on the Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer Research and Patient Care, underscores the critical role NIH-funded clinical trials play in saving lives, even in uncertain times.
