AACR Applauds Confirmation of Dr. Monica Bertagnolli as NIH Director
PHILADELPHIA – Philip D. Greenberg, MD, FAACR, President of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), chief executive officer of the AACR, issued the following statement congratulating Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, on her confirmation by the Senate to serve as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH):
“We are delighted that the Senate has confirmed Dr. Bertagnolli as the next NIH director. Her wealth of experience as a researcher, clinician, and leader will help ensure that NIH continues to foster pathbreaking biomedical research that improves the health and well-being of millions and saves lives from cancer and countless other diseases. We look forward to working with Dr. Bertagnolli in support of public health, as we did during her time at the helm of the National Cancer Institute.
One of the ways that the AACR will support Dr. Bertagnolli and the entire NIH community involves our efforts to organize the annual Rally for Medical Research Hill Day, which takes place each September. As the founding organizer and lead sponsor of this event, the AACR brings together nearly 400 partner organizations to tell Congressional leaders that their support for generous research funding is markedly improving public health, saving lives, spurring economic growth, and maintaining the United States’ position as the global leader in science and medical research.”
