Organizations, Agencies, and Websites

Sources of information and support within the cancer community can sometimes seem hard to find, and at other times the options are overwhelming. We’ve organized more than a hundred resources here to make it easier for you to identify the information, services and assistance you’re trying to find. Search below for information on cancer-related nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, government agencies, research and professional organizations, and informational websites.

South Carolina Cancer Alliance

The South Carolina Cancer Alliance (SCCA) is dedicated to reducing the impact of cancer on all people in South Carolina and eliminating disparities in access, prevention and care. The SCCA hosts a quarterly meeting at the Columbia Conference Center, in Columbia, South Carolina.

Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer

Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC) provides information for people living with oral cancer and cancers of the head and neck. SPOHNC has support groups nationwide and its website offers a list of educational resources, including information on clinical trials.

Susan G. Komen

Susan G. Komen funds research grants and supports breast cancer education, screening, and treatment projects in communities around the world through an extensive network of United States and international affiliates. The organization also provides information about breast health and breast cancer, treatment options, and community support groups through a national toll-free helpline (1-877-GO KOMEN or 1-877-465-6636) and distributes a variety of educational materials to those affected by breast cancer. Helpline support is available in Spanish.

ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association

ThyCa provides information and support for people living with thyroid cancer. It publishes a newsletter and hosts survivor workshops and an annual conference. ThyCa also hosts local support groups and internet support groups.

Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (The)

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults is an organization dedicated to the needs of young men and women facing the challenges of cancer. The organization offers educational programs about the science of cancer for teens and young adults, runs support groups across the country, and conducts outreach programs that aim to educate communities about cancer. The foundation has a patient navigation program that connects patients with people who can help guide them through cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults also maintains a scholarship fund for young people who are facing or who have overcome cancer.

Union for International Cancer Control

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is a global association of cancer-fighting organizations that aims to educate people about cancer and control the disease worldwide. The UICC has fellowship and training opportunities for scientists and publishes the International Journal of Cancer. The UICC brings together an international network of patient advocate groups, cancer societies, public health officials, and research and treatment centers.

Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation

The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF) is a grassroots organization committed to the eradication of breast cancer through education and advocacy. The VBCF holds support group meetings and maintains a calendar of breast cancer events in Virginia. It also provides a packet of information for newly diagnosed women.

Virginia Prostate Cancer Coalition

The Virginia Prostate Cancer Coalition (VPCC) focuses on increasing awareness and screening of prostate cancer. The organization’s website has information on prostate cancer screenings, local support groups, and events.

WebMD

WebMD is an online resource produced by board-certified physicians, medical writers, and trained community moderators. WebMD provides timely news about medical research and information on cancer as well as other medical issues. It offers information specifically designed for newly diagnosed patients and maintains a database of physicians to help patients find doctors in their areas.

Wisconsin Multiple Myeloma Support Group

The Wisconsin Multiple Myeloma Support Group hosts monthly support meetings that include speakers or group discussions. The group also publishes a monthly newsletter that provides a resource list, meeting reminders and notes on new research.
