Organizations, Agencies, and Websites

Sources of information and support within the cancer community can sometimes seem hard to find, and at other times the options are overwhelming. We’ve organized more than a hundred resources here to make it easier for you to identify the information, services and assistance you’re trying to find. Search below for information on cancer-related nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, government agencies, research and professional organizations, and informational websites.

Foundation for Women’s Cancer

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer, formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, is a national organization that works to ensure public awareness of gynecologic cancer prevention, early diagnosis and proper treatment. The foundation publishes brochures and educational materials about gynecologic cancer. The foundation also supports research and training related to gynecologic cancers. The foundation has a database of doctors who treat gynecologic cancers.

Free to Breathe

Free to Breathe, a partnership for lung cancer survival, works to increase awareness about lung cancer and raise funds for treatment. The organization provides information for lung cancer patients and maintains a calendar of lung cancer events across the country.

Friends of Cancer Research

Friends of Cancer Research is a nonprofit organization that aims to accelerate progress toward better tools for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancers. The organization raises awareness about cancer and educates the public about cancer research.

GIST Cancer Research Fund

The GIST Cancer Research Fund (GCRF) works to fund GIST research and to create GIST tissue banks. The organization also provides information and support to patients. GCRF also provides information about pediatric GIST.

GIST Support International

GIST Support International (GSI) is an organization dedicated to educating and supporting patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors. GSI provides information tailored for newly diagnosed patients, including a list of medical centers around the world that have experience treating the disease. GSI connects patients to each other through listservs and by phone.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation

The Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation educates people about inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Its website offers email discussion lists and other educational materials. The organization also raises funds for inflammatory breast cancer research and collects tumor samples for its IBC BioBank.

Institute of Medicine

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a division of the National Academies, which brings together committees of experts in science, medicine and engineering to serve as unbiased advisers who are independent of the United States government. The IOM’s work is done by volunteer scientists and lay people who provide analysis and guidance to the government, professionals, policymakers and the public on important issues in health and medicine. The IOM’s website includes many resources, including reports on cancer survivorship, cancer research and palliative care.

Intercultural Cancer Council

The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) is an advocacy group devoted to promoting policies, programs, partnerships, and research aimed at eliminating the unequal burden of cancer on racial and ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations in the United States and its territories. It provides cancer fact sheets on its website and sponsors a biennial symposium to promote discussions of cancer in minorities and medically underserved communities.

International Myeloma Foundation

The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) offers comprehensive programs and services for patients, family members, and health care professionals. Educational resources are available in 14 languages. The IMF focuses on funding research, providing education, lending support and promoting advocacy initiatives.

Irish Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society (ICS) provides a variety of services to people living with cancer in Ireland. The society primarily provides nursing services to cancer patients. The ICS also educates people about cancer prevention and diagnosis, runs programs to educate people about the dangers of smoking and excessive sun exposure, offers support for newly diagnosed and long-term survivors, provides information about clinical trials, and works to raise money for cancer research.
