Bonnie F. Sloane, PhD, former chair of the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and a longtime member of AACR, died December 24, 2023, at the age of 79. She held the rank of distinguished professor of pharmacology and was also a distinguished professor at the Barabara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.
Born in Pittsburgh, Sloane attended Duke University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1966 and a master’s degree in physiology in 1968. She obtained a doctorate in physiology from Rutgers University in 1976.
After postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania and stints on the faculties of Penn and Michigan State University, she moved in 1980 to Wayne State University in Detroit as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology. She was promoted to associate professor in 1984 and to professor in 1989, and she was named distinguished professor in 2005. From 1995 to 2015, she served as chair of the Department of Pharmacology, the first woman to serve as chair of a department in the WSU School of Medicine.
In 2009, Soane became the first woman to serve as president of the Association of Medical School Pharmacology Chairs. She was elected a fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2021. She became a member of the AACR in 1983.
