Ivy B. Elkins of Evanston, Illinois, an advocate for lung cancer research and for patients with the disease and a member of the AACR, died June 23, 2024. She was 57.
She was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in December 2013. After learning that her cancer had a mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Elkins co-founded EGFR Resisters to support research and communicate with patients. She was particularly proud that in just five years, the group raised over $1 million to support cancer research. She also moderated a Facebook page devoted to patients with the EGFR mutation.
An AACR affiliate member since 2017, she was an advocate in the AACR Scientist↔Survivor Program® in 2017 and 2019 and an advocate mentor in 2022. She served on the Steering Committee for the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2023 and was a member of the AACR/ASCO Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop faculty from 2017-2022.
Elkins was active in the LUNGevity Foundation and attended meetings of the group in Washington, DC. She also worked with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and the Lung Cancer Research Foundation.
She served as a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense Lung Cancer Research program and was an author on several articles in peer reviewed journals.
Elkins had a bachelor’s degree in English from Princeton University and a master’s in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
